Makeup ads from L’Oréal featuring mega-star Julia Roberts and supermodel Christie Turlington have been cut from a U.K. ad campaign, says msnbc Today. The United Kingdom’s Advertising Standards Authority chose to pull the photos because of misleading post-production airbrushing.
The decision came after Jo Swinson, a liberal Member of Parliament, filed a complaint about the ads. Swinson asserted that the advertisements gave women an unreasonable idea about how a female should look, and added that unrealistic images like the ones of Roberts and Turlington are partly responsible for the rise in the number of women seeking plastic surgery and being diagnosed with eating disorders.
L’Oréal U.K. conceded that airbrushing was performed on the photos of Roberts, though minimally. The company attributed most of the ad’s result to the actress’s “naturally healthy and glowing skin,” according to the ASA website. Similar claims were made for the images of Turlington.
