Hunting in Texas: 4 Things to Know Before Applying for a Hunting Permit for Adults

By    |   Thursday, 28 January 2016 05:52 PM EST

Sport hunting in Texas has many options and opportunities to offer participants. Individuals who’ve never hunted before, or never hunted in the state, may find the process and options daunting. Although the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) does its best to simplify the process, there are four highlighted points to bear in mind prior to purchasing licenses and permits.

1. Safety First

All prospective hunters are required to successfully complete a hunter education course. While the resulting certificate is not required for legal purchase of a license, TWPD regulations require the certificate be carried on the sport hunter’s person at all times, along with current and applicable licenses and permits. First-time adult hunters are permitted to purchase a one-time deferral that is valid for one year, provided they meet accompaniment requirements while in the field.

2. Discounts

Special licensing prices are available for resident active duty military personnel and disabled veterans. Interested persons should check with the nearest game commission office, not a licensing agent, as there are specific documentation requirements necessary for the purchase of these discounted licenses. Senior and lifetime license discounts are also available from any licensing agent.

3. Permits

Certain game species, seasons, or regions may require the purchase of additional permits in addition to the standard hunting license. Hunters should make certain they have acquired the necessary permits and tags prior to engaging in active sport hunting activities. Game wardens can impose steep fines for violations.

4. Safety Always

TPWD hunting regulations require active hunters to wear “blaze orange” attire and headgear that meets or exceeds certain minimum measurements. This color ensures visibility of and to fellow sport hunters while in the field, and minimizes the possibility of hunting accidents. Exceptions are made for parties hunting birds, including turkey and migratory game, alligators, and bighorn sheep, and those individuals not actively participating in hunting defined by their location in vehicles or campsites.
