Hunting in Wyoming: 5 Animals to Hunt in the Summer

By    |   Monday, 04 January 2016 09:06 PM EST

Summertime may not be the most popular time of year to go hunting in Wyoming, but the year’s warmest season offers several opportunities for hunters who are eager to get out in the field.

Here are five animals that can be hunted in the summer in Wyoming.

1. Elk
Most hunting seasons for elk are during the fall, however, there are limited opportunities to hunt elk at the very end of the summer months. Approximately a third of the hunting areas administered by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department allow hunting starting in the middle of August. Most of the seasons end in late September.

2. Bighorn Sheep
Another big game animal available for limited summer hunting in Wyoming is the Bighorn Sheep. Similar to elk, most of the seasons are during the fall. Three hunting areas allow firearms hunting starting in August. Archery hunters have a very limited hunting season that starts with the firearms season but only runs for two weeks in August, the WGFD said.

3. Falconry
For those who use falcons to hunt, there are several small game animals that can be taken during the summer months. WGFD President Charles Price said cottontail rabbits, snowshoe hares and three types of squirrels can be taken starting in early March and ending on the last day of August. The limits are very low, however, with only one allowed per day and a possession limit of two animals. For the rabbits and hares, those limits are per species, but for the squirrels, it is a combined total.
