Heckler & Koch Law Enforcement: Guns HK Makes for Police

By    |   Thursday, 16 April 2015 02:57 PM EDT

Despite a variety of weapons and ammunition being designated "police" or "police special" through the years, there's a lot of crossover between what firearms law enforcement officials carry and what civilians carry and use.

Although it's not specifically designed as a police weapon, one of Heckler & Koch's newest products, the VP9 automatic pistol, has received much attention and favorable reviews on websites oriented toward police officers, such as PoliceOne.com. "As with all HK firearms, whether they’re rifle or pistol, the VP9 is built to a very high standard. . . I predict great things for HK’s latest model," said reviewer Andrew L. Butts.

Heckler & Koch announced its Model P30 semiautomatic pistol in 2007, touting it as a pistol designed for law enforcement, military and civilian use. The pistol is available in different calibers, and has a customizable handgrip and a mount for accessories, such as a light or a laser sight.

In 2004, the company announced a contract with the Department of Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement office to supply its agents with H&K pistols. The company stated in its announcement that "this contract ranks as the single largest handgun procurement ever by a U.S. law enforcement agency with a maximum quantity of 65,000 pistols."

The same year, H&K secured a four-year contract to supply the Transportation Security Agency with the law enforcement modification (LEM) version of its USP40 pistol.
HK's LEM modification, which is also available as a kit to convert some H&K pistols not made with it, reduces the force necessary to pull the trigger to fire the weapon in semi-automatic mode – that is, without having to manually cock the weapon to fire again.
