Colt's Most Popular Firearms

By    |   Monday, 20 April 2015 10:23 AM EDT

For 160 years, the Colt Manufacturing Co. has reaped the benefits of producing some of the best-made and most popular guns on the planet. It is a company that has lived a high-profile existence in terms of quality ever since Samuel Colt started carving models out of wood as a young seaman in the mid-1800s.

Despite today’s ever evolving and saturated gun market, Colt’s most popular firearms are still some of the most popular and well-made guns available. Here are a few that stand out:

Colt .357 Python
Any mention of Colt would be remiss to exclude a tip-of-the-hat of the most popular gun the Connecticut armory ever produced. Though production ended entirely in 2005, the legendary Colt .357 double action revolver remains an American icon.

First introduced in 1955 and popularized in movies and on TV even until today, the distinctive look of this gun is unmistakable. According to gun reviewer Chuck Hawkes, the .357 Python’s accuracy is legendary. In most circles, it is considered the best all-around revolver ever manufactured.

Colt 380 Mustang XSP
Acknowledging the fastest growing market segment in the firearms industry, Colt essentially scaled down its famous 1911 model to produce its most popular conceal-carry option with the 380 Mustang XSP.

D.K. Pridgen of PersonalDefenseWorld.com described the Mustang XSP as a lightweight defender with a 21st-century makeover, dead-on sights, a great feel, excellent shootability, and great accuracy. In addition to the Colt name, said Pridgen, the Mustang is a perfect landing point for those interested in concealed carry. Weight and size will never be issue with this diminutive brute.

Colt 01991 .45
According to TheSixGunJournal.com, the model 01991 .45 ACP is a prime example of Colt’s ongoing commitment to top-shelf quality. A direct descendant of the popular military issue Browning M1911, the long trigger, flat mainspring housing, and original style recoil spring system remain from the original M1911 design, the Colt website said.

Quality-wise, the 01991 is still exceptional in almost every regard. In terms of design and features, it remains a standard that many have tried to duplicate. Few have succeeded.
