Gun Dog Breeders: What Characteristics Do Breeders Look for in a Chesapeake Bay Retriever?

By    |   Friday, 29 January 2016 03:11 PM EST

While gun dog breeders frequently look to the Chesapeake Bay retriever for its hunting prowess, this particular canine group has other characteristics that have made it endearing to hunters through the years. Below are six reasons why some gun dog breeders choose the Chesapeake Bay retriever.

1. Chessies, as the Chesapeake Bay retriever breed is commonly nicknamed, has long been noted for its loyalty. If properly trained and given obedience training from a young age, this canine has been known to stand by its "pack."

M. J. Nelson, at Gun Dog magazine, summed up this belief, saying, "(Chessies') deep-seated affection for their owner can be downright smothering."

2. This breed is an excellent guard dog. In a nod to its origins, Chessies hail from the Chesapeake Bay region, where from the get-go breeders expected Chessies to guard hunters' boats and other important equipment. This trait has been carried down from one generation to the next.

3. As long as it is instilled at an early age, most Chesapeake Bay retrievers are willing to accept training and have been noted for their obedience — a trait that runs alongside its loyalty.

4. There are a series of caveats, but gun dog breeders frequently cite Chessies' socialization skills as a plus. The trait is often a learned one that comes through training during adolescence.

Gravel Creek Chesapeakes laid out some helpful advice
to prospective owners of this gun dog: "Once your puppy has received its final vaccination series, I suggest taking your pup to the pet store … so (it) can meet new people and surroundings."

5. Chessies have been known to blend into a family. With the proper training, this breed typically gets along well with adults and children alike, one of the characteristics that makes for a lovable pet around the house.

6. While outdoor physical activity is a must for a Chesapeake Bay retriever to remain healthy in body and mind, the breed also is typically noted for its ability to adapt well into different surroundings. For this reason, transitions from one setting to another typically happen with ease.
