Golf: 6 Ways to Get Your Game Ready for the Season

By    |   Monday, 15 August 2016 08:10 AM EDT

If your golf game is feeling a bit rusty, don't fret. There are several things you can do to freshen up your skills before hitting the links.

Here are six ways to get your golf game ready for the season.

1. Check your equipment — Before hitting the links, check your grips, shafts, and the loft of your driver to make sure you're ready to get the most out of your game, SwingFix instructor Kandi Comer writes for The Golf Channel. Ask your golf pro to assist you with any questions you have about your equipment and also consider a new pair of shoes or cleats.

2. Set goals — Set realistic goals that are scaled so you don’t become too frustrated if your scores aren't what you want them to be, Comer recommends. Take notes during your first few rounds of what you want to practice, and consider taking a class or attending a golf clinic to refine your game.

3. Exercise PGA Master Professional Michael Doctor told PGA.com that golfers should keep a regular exercise routine year-round and consider teaming up with a trainer who specializes in working with golfers. Choose cardio exercises to build stamina along with plenty of stretching for flexibility.

4. Start with putting — Practicing putting is one of the easiest ways to get back in the swing, Doctor said. One of the most important elements of golf, putting can be practiced in your home or office. From there, move on to chipping and pitching before practicing full swings.

5. Practice while you play Golf Digest Teaching Professional Jim McLean recommends hitting the course by yourself and playing a two-ball scramble. After each shot, drop another ball and do it again. Challenge yourself by playing the worse ball.

6. Keep track — Write down detailed statistics about your game, such as how many fairways you hit and how many putts you took, Golf Digest suggested. This will allow you to analyze your strengths and weaknesses and tailor your practice accordingly.
