Fishing in Alaska: Anglers' Favorite Saltwater and Marine Catches

Alaska, the 49th state, has a long coastline of rugged inlets, harbours, and offshore islands that stretches a distance of 6,640 miles, more than all other states combined.

With so much marine area it is a haven for fishermen, but there is plenty to go around.

The great variety of species to catch means there is something for everyone, from the big game enthusiast to the family on a day trip.

Some anglers’ favorite saltwater catches to be found in Alaska are:

1. King Salmon

The largest of the salmon species, this a prized catch among sea-anglers. They can live up to seven years and grow to a size of up to 120 pounds. High oil content leads to a great flavor and the king salmon is a great treat for the table.

2. Halibut

A popular fish with sport fishermen who have the time it takes to land one. Halibut don’t give up easily and neither do they take a hook easily. The prize is in the size of this great fish, the record halibut landed was nearly 500 pounds.

3. Ling Cod

This ancient fish is renowned for its fighting qualities. The Ling cod is very plentiful during the summer season and can reach a weight of 50 pounds, which add to its value as a catch for the sportsman.

4. Red Salmon


Also known as the sockeye, this beautiful red fish is very popular with all anglers for its great sport and is a good size to land, averaging about seven pounds. Its deep red flesh and high oil content make it a must for the table.

5. Cutthroat Trout

This very distinctive subspecies of trout is a great game fish and very popular with all anglers. The seawater cutthroat lives in estuaries, and along the shorelines making it a target for families and fishermen with just a few hours to spare.

6. Salmon Shark

This medium-sized shark is the only one that is a regular in Alaskan waters. It can reach a length of up to 10 feet and the record landed was over 660 pounds. It can be found at depths up to 500 feet, but in season can come close to the surface to feed.

7. Silver Salmon

The most popular of the salmon fishing in catch amounts alone. The coho, as they are also known, can live up to three years and reach a weight of around 15 pounds, making it a perfect game fish for all to chase.
