'The Day the Music Died'

Thursday, 03 February 2011 04:54 PM EST

Today marks the 52nd anniversary of the tragic 1959 plane crash that carried Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and JP “Big Bopper” Richardson.

At the time of the infamous crash, Buddy Holly was only 22 with a pregnant wife back home, Richardson was 28, and Valens was still a boyish 17.

The day has since been remembered as “the day the music died” and memorialized, perhaps most famously, by Don Mclean’s song “American Pie” commemorating the rock legends.

Below you can find Mclean’s song, with lyrics.
