How to Diagnose Folliculitis

Thursday, 09 June 2011 05:17 PM EDT

Folliculitis can be diagnosed through the observation of signs and symptoms; in severe cases, a tissue sample or a biopsy test is done. Shaving, waxing or plucking of hairs, poor hygiene, obesity, use of unsanitized hot tubs, skin injuries, wounds, excessive sweating, weak immune system, etc. are some of the causes of folliculitis.

Simply looking at areas of the body where folliculitis is common can lead to a diagnosis. Folliculitis can occur anywhere on the skin or scalp where there is a hair follicle. Areas most frequently affected by folliculitis include the beard area, upper lip, arms, armpits, thighs, buttocks, bikini line in women, and scalp.

Common symptoms of a follicular infection are the appearance of painful and sometimes pus-filled red or white-headed spots, itching, rash, and inflammation of the skin. Depending on the severity of symptoms, individuals may choose to treat folliculitis on their own or to consult a doctor. When treating folliculitis, a doctor may choose to biopsy the skin if the infection seems severe.
