Burning Man Festival 2011 Starts Today

The annual Burning Man festival starts today in Black Rock City, Nevada, and runs through September 5 in a celebration dedicated to “community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance,” according to the festival’s website. 

The celebration is founded on “the ten principles” of radical inclusion, gifting, decommodification, radical self-reliance, radical self-expression, communal effort, civic responsibility, leaving no trace, participation, and immediacy.
 

The art theme for the 2011 festival is slated to be “Rites of Passage.”

Tickets to the week-long event are sold out.
