Retirement: What Position Does 60-Plus Association Take on Medicaid?

By    |   Tuesday, 02 June 2015 03:27 PM EDT

The 60-Plus Association is a seniors advocacy group founded in 1992 that aims to represent seniors in the U.S. political system as well as provide an alternative to left-leaning AARP.

The group is non-partisan but believes in small government and outlines abolishing the federal estate tax and saving social security for younger people as their primary goals.

On Medicaid, the 60 Plus Association has made it clear that they oppose its expansion. In group launched an ad in 2014 criticizing Arizona Mayor Scott Smith’s support for Obamacare’s expansion of Medicaid.

“Experts knew most Arizonans who could be forced into AHCCCS [Arizona’s Medicaid agency] through Obamacare’s Medicaid expansion already had private insurance. Until their plans were taken away by Obamacare that is. Instead of fighting for us so we could keep our plans and get government out of the way, Smith supported Obamacare’s Medicaid expansion. That’s not the leadership we need.”

In addition to opposing the program’s expansion, the 60-Plus Association has identified Medicaid as a tool Obama uses to falsely inflate the success of Obamacare.

Jim Martin, chairman of the 60-Plus Association, recalled in one of the group’s press releases that “the President told America during the State of the Union that Obamacare has provided care to nine million Americans, which is a complete lie as he included Medicaid, which of course already exists, and plays no role in selling insurance.”

Chairman Martin further criticized President Obama’s tax policies in a 2013 The Daily Caller article in which he advocated for Medicare’s Part D prescription drug benefits. “Injecting price controls like those in the failed Medicaid program, where costs keep rising and doctors are less willing to serve patients, is not in the interest of seniors,” he said.

The group’s skepticism of Medicaid is in line with their “free enterprise, less government, less taxes approach” listed on their website.
