The Seniors Coalition vs. AARP: Comparing Retiree Organizations

By    |   Friday, 22 May 2015 05:47 PM

The Seniors Coalition is an advocacy non-profit organization that aims to address the interests and policy preferences of senior citizens. AARP is a similar non-governmental, non-profit organization that advocates for senior citizens, especially for healthcare, employment, security, and retirement planning. Both offer members various benefits including discounts and special offers for insurance, pharmaceuticals, hotels, and other services.

Though similar in their missions, TSC and AARP have different policy agendas on issues facing senior citizens. The following are considered hot topics within the organizations:

Social Security:
Both AARP and TSC advocate for Social Security’s importance. AARP takes a more liberal approach to Social Security, strongly opposing reforming the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), which allocates Social Security benefits according to the cost-of-living. In 2013, TSC promoted a “Million Petition Challenge,” in which the organization attempted to get a million signatures in favor of Social Security COLA Reform that would safeguard some Social Security funds and block illegal immigrants from receiving benefits. AARP maintained that reforming COLA would result in too extensive cuts in Social Security benefits.

Affordable Care Act:
AARP is a staunch supporter of the Affordable Care Act. In August 2013, AARP published an article enumerating the “essential benefits” of the law, including the extension of health-care benefits to millions of Americans with no healthcare or who are underinsured. TSC launched a petition to Congress strongly opposing the Affordable Care Act’s implementation of the Independent Payment Advisory Board, an advisory board set up to control healthcare costs independently of political pressures. TSC’s petition called for the “complete abolition of the IPAB and the total repeal of Obamacare.”

Health Care Benefits for Illegal Immigrants:
TSC launched its largest grassroots campaign in opposition to the 2004 Mexican Totalization Agreement, which would have granted Social Security benefits to illegal immigrants. The organization encourages members to sign 1 million petitions against benefits for illegal immigrants. Conversely, AARP has released several advocacy articles calling for “justice” for illegal immigrants and the extension of benefits.
