Romania: Briton Sentenced in Filmmaker's Death

Wednesday, 16 December 2009 07:50 AM EST

A Romanian court has rejected the appeal of a British citizen convicted on manslaughter charges for causing a 2006 car accident that killed award-winning Romanian film director Cristian Nemescu.

The Bucharest appeals court on Monday rejected the appeal by Ali Imran, confirming the 6-year-long prison sentence against him.

Nemescu, 27, a sound engineer and a taxi driver died after a car driven by Imran plowed into their vehicle in Aug. 2006.

Reports said Imran was traveling at least 140 kilometers (88 miles) per hour, more than double the speed limit, and that he ran a red light. Imran was reportedly unhurt.

Nemescu's unfinished film "California Dreamin'" won an award at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.
