Far-left Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren announced her candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination on Saturday. Whether she has a fighting chance is another matter.
The fact in 2019 is this: It would be difficult for a John F. Kennedy or Bill Clinton to capture their party’s crown. Democrats have moved far to the left and the whispers of socialism abound.
How else can one explain the rise of far-left socialists like Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and freshman Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA)? Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) goes so far as to argue for full government health care. She sees no role for private health insurance.
That would mean 150 million Americans would lose the insurance they get from their employer and trust the government instead. Yet such far-left ideas are met with roars from the assembled crowds who cheer for anything free as long it isn’t themselves paying for it.
Yes, Medicare for all Americans and government-paid tuition find mass appeal. None of the announced candidates have explained how such massive government programs will be funded or operate. It seems that if you love the DMV, you’ll love huge new federal bureaucracies.
If you are a so-called “moderate” Democrat, your best bet to avoid pie-in-the-sky candidates is former Vice President Joe Biden, who has already tried and failed to secure his party’s presidential nomination several times. He has not announced, but if he succeeds and wins the presidency, he’d be 79-years-old.
Socialist Bernie Sanders, who is about the same age as Biden, wants a huge estate tax increase. Damn the grandkids and full steam ahead with more government taxes.
Not to be outdone, freshman Congresswoman and avowed far, far lefty Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), now appears to overshadow Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). She wants huge increases in income taxes, plus trillions in spending on green energy. Where does this money come from and who pays for it?
Then there is newly announced Elizabeth Warren who wants a wealth tax.
The list of likely far-left Democratic candidates unannounced include disgraced Vietnam vet liar, Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) who wants an increase in social security taxes imposed on the rich. Who are the ‘rich?’ That goes undefined. But it ignites the crowds who cheer to the sound of “free.”
There is little doubt the Democratic Party has taken a swing to the far left. It is a knee jerk reaction to the capitalistic Trump administration they so venomously hate since Hillary Clinton lost to him in 2016.
But God forbid their enclave of socialist candidates be challenged by the likes of an independent such as former Starbucks billionaire CEO Howard Schultz. Unlike the independent candidacy of Ross Perot in 1992 that helped topple incumbent President George H.W. Bush, Schultz would most likely hand a second term to Trump.
But it seems the Democrats are doing just fine at this point losing the 2020 election even without a third-party candidate. Perhaps the nominee should run as the ‘Shoot-Yourself-In-The-Foot Party’ hopeful.
