Mideast Unrest a Sign We Need to Address Energy Concerns

Every time there is a political hiccup in the Middle East, a national conversation about the possibility of higher oil prices ensues. But a cursory look at recent footage from that volatile region suggests that the revolutions happening in Tunisia, Iran, Egypt and Libya are serious geopolitical events that will have equally serious ramifications for America's energy policy.

There were reports Wednesday that Libya's dictator, Moammar Gadhafi, has ordered security services to start sabotaging oil facilities. Allegedly, they will blow up several oil pipelines, cutting off flow to Mediterranean ports.

While the right and the left fail to find common ground on a national energy plan, we're held hostage, yet again, by the threat of $5-a-gallon oil. Remember how much fun we had with that in 2008, when oil hit a peak of $143 a barrel? It's rising to about $100 right now. Isn't it about time for an adult conversation about energy in this country?
