A new report suggests there is a noticeable correlation between when President Donald Trump criticizes public officials and when leaks that are damaging to the White House hit the media.

Jonathan Swan of Axios reported a GOP operative told him this after The Washington Post published a story that suggested Trump is now being investigated for obstruction of justice:

"Leak was probably a response to stories about POTUS firing Mueller. Can't fire him now," a GOP operative text read.

There have been reports in recent days, including one from Newsmax CEO Christopher Ruddy, that Trump was considering firing Robert Mueller — a former FBI director who is now serving as the special counsel investigating whether Trump's campaign had ties to Russia.

The Post story confirmed obstruction of justice is a potential avenue being looked at.
