Russian President Vladimir Putin has been amassing vast reserves of gold, seeing the precious commodity as vital for financing his nation's war on Ukraine – and as a key tool to evade the onerous Western sanctions resulting from the conflict.

Experts remain divided, however, on whether Putin's play to evade sanctions will work.
