China and Russia are racing to develop “hypersonic” missiles that travel so fast U.S. anti-missile defenses would have almost no chance to stop them before they hit their targets, according to U.S. defense experts.

In this first of a special two-part special report, sources say the United States once led in developing the new technology, but now has fallen behind.
