Ben Carson to Newsmax TV: Trump Is No Racist

An African-American member of President Donald Trump's Cabinet is insisting the nation's chief executive is not a racist, refuting what Michael Cohen said last week.

During an exclusive interview with Newsmax's John Gizzi, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson said Cohen — who previously worked as Trump's personal attorney — was wrong when he called Trump a racist during a congressional hearing.

"I think Cohen is trying to ingratiate himself to the people who hate Trump, and he figured if he says these kinds of things, that will accomplish that," Carson said.

"I've never seen anything even remotely [from Trump] that would remind me of racist. And believe me, I recognize a racist when I see them."

The interview with Carson aired on Monday night's "Newsmax Now."

Cohen's remark came during a sensational day of testimony in front of the House Oversight Committee on Feb. 27. Trump and people close to him strongly disagree with Cohen's assessment of the president.

Carson also told Gizzi he plans to leave the administration after Trump's first term ends.
