Nearly all Republicans support a photo ID requirement to vote, and most do not support absentee ballots, a new Gallup poll found.

Gallup survey results released Friday show that only 27% of GOP voters support sending absentee ballot applications to all eligible voters before an election. Most Democrats (88%) favor the idea, with 63% of independents saying likewise.

Regarding a requirement that all voters provide a photo ID to fill out a ballot at their voting place, 97% of GOP voters said they support such action. A total of 84% of independents agree, with only 53% of Democrats saying the same.

Democrats' support for photo ID has declined 10 points since 2016.

Overall, 79% of voters favor a photo ID requirement and 60% support sending absentee ballot applications to all eligible voters.

As for early voting, by which voters can cast their ballots before Election Day, a majority of Democrats (95%), independents (79%) and Republicans (60%) support the process. Overall, 78% support early voting, Gallup found.

Republicans' support for early voting has declined from 74% in 2016, while Democrats' support has risen 10 points.

Gallup also asked voters about drop boxes, automatic voter registration and removing inactive voters from registration lists.

Overall, 65% of voters favor enacting automatic voter registration when individuals do business with the Department of Motor Vehicles or certain other state agencies; 60% support sending absentee ballot applications to all eligible voters; and 39% support removing people from voter registration lists if they don't vote in any elections during a 5-year period.

The party breakdowns:

  • 61% of Republicans, 38% of independents and 18% of Democrats support limiting the number of drop boxes.
  • 59% of Republicans, 40% of independents and 19% of Democrats support removing people from voter registration lists.
  • 47% of Republicans, 65% of independents and 81% of Democrats support enacting automatic voter registration.

Public support for photo ID requirements, early voting and automatic voter registration remain unchanged from 2016, when Gallup last measured U.S. views. A total of 80% U.S. adults in 2016 favored requiring photo identification as well as early voting laws, and 63% supported automatic voter registration.

The new Gallup survey was conducted July 5-26 with a random sample of 1,013 adults. The margin of error is plus-or-minus 4%
