Rep. Dean Phillips, D-Minn., said the ongoing impeachment inquiry investigation involving President Joe Biden and his family's business practices might make Biden "unelectable" in 2024.

Special counsel David Weiss indicted last week Hunter Biden, the president son, on charges of failing to file or pay taxes and of lying on tax forms. Phillips, who is challenging Biden for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination, told Semafor on Sunday that he would vote against the Republican impeachment inquiry.

"I don't see the evidence of it," Phillips said.

He added that "when your own son and your own brother are clearly, at the very least unethical and at worst, doing illegal things — my goodness, of course, the country pays attention to it. People do believe that it perhaps makes him unelectable — somehow, it conflates him with the Trump family's indiscretions."

Phillips said that while Biden is a "good man," many voters have decided against voting for him in 2024. Phillips expressed doubts that impeachment would rally Democrats to Biden's defense in the way that former President Donald Trump received support during his first impeachment.

"I've never had anybody in my family indicted, not that I know of," Phillips said. "I haven't had a family foundation shut down in New York for being unethical."
