Florida Senate candidate Connie Mack IV is not among the Republicans trying to distance themselves from ’s controversial “47 percent” remarks.
"Clearly was discussing our economic system, which because of excessive government interference, often hurts the very people it's meant to help and creates a tax system that is wildly disproportional across our economy," Mack said in a statement to the
Tampa Bay Times.
"Government must be restructured to be effective and efficient, with a tax system that is more simple and fair."
The son of former Florida Sen. and Gov. Connie Mack, Mack represents Florida’s 14th District in the U.S House of Representatives. He is challenging Democratic incumbent Sen. Bill Nelson in the November elections.
In videotaped comments from a May fundraiser made public this week, Romney told big-dollar donors that he doesn’t worry about the 47 percent of Americans who don’t pay taxes, saying they consider themselves “victims” entitled to government handouts.
