Republicans and Democrats alike make a mistake if they assume Nancy Pelosi will not be Speaker of the House in 2019 when the Democrats become the majority in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Though many Democrats have pledged that they will not vote for her in that position, they had best get real. Politics is supposed to be about representing the people. The reality is to do that one must first get elected. In getting elected, candidates have to bring votes and money to the game.

The evidence of the Democrat Party’s debt says something is amiss.

That party’s general lack of enthusiasm for its chairman Tom Perez is palpable. The fact that Keith Ellison won the election for Attorney General in Minnesota while maintaining his co-chair position for his party amidst substantial allegations of sexual harassment smells in view of their lambasting Associate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

The tragedy thus far is the inability of Democrats to bring the votes to the table they need to win many of the key races. Secondly they are weighed down by the seeming “anti-American” rhetoric of too many of their newer representatives espousing a philosophy that is way left of center which even many in their own party aren’t buying. And lastly they face a failure of leadership in DNC Co-Chairs Perez and Ellison to get their members to fall in line enough to get something done and raise the necessary money for their races, which isn’t happening.

Such was not a problem for Pelosi. As a matter of fact, it was she who shepherded the Affordable Health Care Act through Congress, not President Obama. She convinced both sides of the aisle and the American people to accept her word that the bill had to be passed before legislators were allowed to read it. She was willing to compromise for half a loaf rather than hold out for the whole — likely getting nothing in the process. That resulted in a tremendous con job bought into by the majority with promises made which were not kept as folks now scramble to find personal physicians and resources to pay these bills.

Notice that even President Trump has increasingly become effusive in his praise for the previous speaker. He likely appreciates that if his agenda is to be fulfilled and the divisiveness created by the "Never Trumpers" quelled, Trump needs someone who understands the “Art of the Deal” at the table to navigate the nuances of complex political policies to get his legislation through the House. As has been said, keep your friends close and your supposed enemies closer.

Pelosi understands that the key to 2020 for her party as well as that for Republicans is to pass reasonable legislation which protects the best interest of the American people while giving the president some wins rather than allow him to continuously bombard attacks on his opponents or have her own party continuously tied up in fights which detract from necessary reforms to keep the government working.
