Renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson angered Christians on Christmas Day with a series of tweets poking fun of Christmas.
The one that sparked the most anger was when he wrote, "On this day long ago, a child who was born who, by age 30, would transform the world. Happy Birthday Isaac Newton b. Dec 25, 1642."
That single text was retweeted more than 59,000 times and prompted a litany of indignant responses.
"This is disrespectful to Christians. Jesus created the science you cherish so much. Everyone finds God eventually, you will too," tweeted Brian Fagioli back to Tyson.
"Weather forecast for the deGrasse Tyson household today: smug with a 90% chance of arrogance," wrote Republican Rep. Steve Smith of Georgia on Twitter.
Another tweet sent out by Tyson said, "QUESTION: This year, what do all the world's Muslims and Jews call December 25th? ANSWER: Thursday."
The other two were more innocuous.
"Merry Christmas to all. A Pagan holiday (BC) becomes a Religious holiday (AD). Which then becomes a Shopping holiday (USA)," he tweeted.
And, "Santa knows Physics: Of all colors, Red Light penetrates fog best. That's why Benny the Blue-nosed reindeer never got the gig," he added, in his final Christmas tweet.
