4/14/1986 — Most Famous Checkpoint: Charlie

A car enters East Berlin through Checkpoint Charlie, the most famous of three U.S. passageways between the two Berlins. President Kennedy ordered U.S. forces to build the three gates — named for letters, Alpha for ‘A,’ Beta for ‘B,’ and Charlie for ‘C.’ By 1962, Charlie was the only spot where foreigners were allowed to travel between the cities.
