This sculpture, erected in Berlin this summer, gives three dimensions to Peter Leibing’s immortalized photo of 19-year-old East German border guard Hans Conrad Schumann jumping over a barbed-wire fence to freedom on Aug. 15, 1961. Decades later, dogged with depression that eventually propelled him to commit suicide, Schumann said he never really felt free until Nov. 9, 1989.
