Sen. Tim Kaine said Hillary Clinton's election as president would break a glass ceiling in his own career – making her the first female boss he has ever worked for.

In an interview with MSNBC's Rachel Maddow, Clinton's running mate – a civil rights lawyer – said he only worked for female supervising attorneys "on occasion."

"This will be the first time I've had a female boss," the Virginia senator said, adding: "Wow, I hadn't thought of it that way."

"I get to be now, play a supportive role — that's what the vice president's main job is — to a woman who's going to make history, to a president who will preside over the centennial of women getting the right to vote," Kaine said.

He said rewriting the protocol for White House traditions will be interesting.

"Is my wife second lady if there's no first lady?" he wondered. "There's no complete playbook for this, but that's cool too. There's traditions that you honor, but it's always something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. So you got to make your own traditions."
