Allies of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz are trying to get him on the ballot at the upcoming Republican National Convention, which would likely earn him a speaking spot at the four-day event.

According to Politico, Colorado and Maine delegates have been gathering signatures in an effort to get Cruz on the nomination ballot. With enough states doing the same thing, Cruz could potentially disrupt presumptive nominee Donald Trump's convention.

Trump is outlining a list of speakers at the convention that includes his wife, his four adult children, athletes, and celebrities.

The usual array of high-profile party members won't speak at this convention. That includes former Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, and 2012 nominee Mitt Romney.

There were conflicting reports Wednesday that said Cruz was negotiating for a speaking role at the convention.

A Wednesday report claimed the RNC rules committee is drawing closer to allowing delegates to vote for whichever candidate they choose, rather than being bound to a single candidate on the first ballot.
