Sam Clovis: Hillary's Speech Reflects Trump, Sanders Advances
Fox News' "America's Newsroom"

Hillary Clinton's fiery speech against Donald Trump on Thursday came because she did not expect the presumptive GOP nominee to catch up with her so fast and because Bernie Sanders is "right over her shoulder," Trump campaign national co-chairman and chief policy advisor Sam Clovis said Friday.

"I think the whole premise of her speech was supposed to be on foreign policy, but I don't think there is very much in there," Clovis told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" host Martha MacCallum.

"Certainly, if she wants to extend the record of Barack Obama, I think that's, we'll be happy to run against that ... I think this speech may have been just as much focused for people inside of the beltway people in Washington and people in California."

Also, said Clovis, "The fact we caught up with Mrs. Clinton this fast I think really startled her as well. This is why she pivoted to the personal side as opposed to policy side."

Meanwhile, with Sanders polling very closely to Clinton in the key state of California, she has moved "very hard left," said Clovis, possibly even further left than President Barack Obama.

"I think it is hard to get left of this president," he said. "I think Bernie Sanders might be out there. Left of, but I think that Bernie Sanders has made her tack left very hard. I think if she tries to tack back to the center, it will look confusing. That will show weakness on her part as a candidate."

MacCallum said that Trump has faced criticism about not being "fond of digging in, in terms of learning foreign policy," but Clovis said that Trump actually has "great curiosity about those issues."

Trump has an "excellent young man," senior policy advisor Steven Miller, said Clovis, noting that he himself is also working with Trump on Strategy.

"As we get closer and closer to the convention and then as we get ready for the debate season coming up after Labor Day, I think we'll be primed and ready and I think this whole campaign has been focusing on a crescendo."

He said the campaign is also in dialogue with experts all over the country, but "we're not exactly keen on going to the tried and true 30-year inside the beltway establishment people, who frankly have gotten us in the ditch along the way. So we'll be looking for fresh talent."
