CNN to Split Crowded '16 GOP Field Into Two Parts for Debate

The television networks hosting the Republican presidential debates are coming up with some creative ways to handle the expected large field of GOP candidates – including a two-for-one event.

CNN announced Wednesday the details of a Sept. 16 debate, saying the event would be divided into two parts featuring two groups of candidates.

One group will feature the top 10 candidates according to public polling, and the other will include candidates who meet the minimum threshold of 1 percent in public polling but are ranked outside the top 10, CNN reports.

The debate will take place at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California.

"We support and respect the decision CNN has made," Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee, said about the format, CNN reports.

Fox News also released details of its Republican debate, scheduled for Aug. 6, announcing that only the top 10 candidates will be allowed to take the stage.

But since anywhere from 15 to 20 candidates are expected to be in the large field of contenders, Fox indicated it would give "additional coverage and airtime" during the day of the debate to those who are excluded.
