West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin caused a stir on Election Day, refusing to confirm he would remain a Democrat if the Senate finished stuck at a 50-50 tie between the two major parties, according to NBC News and Fox News broadcasts Tuesday night.

A spokesman for Mancin has not yet responded to a request for comment, according to The Hill

Two prominent incumbents, John McCain, R-Ariz, and Marco Rubio, R-Fla., won re-election Tuesday night.

Before Manchin's reported potential flip, the Democrats needed to pick up five seats in the Senate to take a majority, or four if they won the White House. They did flip in Illinois with Tammy Duckworth's toppling of incumbent Republican Mark Kirk.
