Americans for Tax Relief Tuesday called President Donald Trump's budget proposal "a conservative blueprint to reverse the nation's frail fiscal state, enact tax reform, and grow the economy."
"Trump starts by respecting taxpayers," said ATR President Grover Norquist. "Trump's budget shows that he realizes every dollar being spent by Washington is first earned by American workers and then taken from them.
"Spending wisely, ripping out wasteful, duplicative and counterproductive spending programs, is step one," he said. "The budget blueprint is a dramatic U-turn from the policies of the last administration."
Trump's budget would cut $3.6 trillion in government spending over 10 years, beginning in October, including more than $800 billion from Medicaid and over $192 billion from food stamps.
In addition, the administration's plan includes adding $469 billion to the Pentagon's budget and providing a $1.6 billion down payment to begin building a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico.
ATR noted that the budget plan also cuts the IRS budget by $239 million, assumes a 15 percent rate on corporations and small businesses, and calls for "strong economic growth" of 3 percent.
"The proposal will ensure that the federal government lives within its means, programs are run efficiently, and taxpayer dollars are responsibly spent," Norquist said.
