Former New York Gov. George Pataki, who dropped his own bid for the GOP presidential nomination last December, Friday called on Donald Trump to "step down" following the release of a bombshell tape recording of the GOP nominee speaking explicitly about his exploits with women.

Pataki, who has been harsh about his opinion of Trump throughout the campaign, said in a Twitter message he is "horrified" by the tape and Trump's campaign:

Pataki, like Ohio Gov. John Kasich has never endorsed Trump, despite an agreement by candidates to support the eventual nominee. The New Yorker also did not attend the Republican National Convention in Cleveland when Trump was nominated.

The former governor has remained mostly silent about the race, reports The Buffalo News. He endorsed Kasich in April for the nomination, and at that time said he did not think Trump should become president.

"I don't think he's going to be president of the United States and if he's going to be our nominee I fear he's going to drive the Republican Party off a cliff," Pataki said at the time.
