Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., dismissed President Donald Trump's claim Thursday the ongoing Russia probe is a witch-hunt, calling the statement "outrageous."
Durbin addressed reporters after Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein met with lawmakers on Capitol Hill regarding the FBI's investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia.
"I think that is an outrageous statement," Durbin said of Trump's Thursday morning remark. "Anyone who knows director [Robert] Mueller and his service to the country in the military, as a federal judge and as a director of the FBI, to characterize any undertaking by him as a witch-hunt is totally unfair."
The Department of Justice appointed former FBI director Robert Mueller as special counsel to oversee the Russia probe. During a White House press conference with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, Trump seemed to soften his tone a bit regarding the investigation.
"I respect the move [to bring on Mueller], but the entire thing has been a witch hunt," Trump said.
