Sen. Chuck Grassley on Monday sent a letter to FBI Director James Comey about the agency's reported interest in hiring the former British spy responsible for an unverified dossier about President Donald Trump, the Washington Examiner reports.
The top Republican on the Judiciary Committee isn't waiting to find out if the report is true or not – he wants to Comey to come clean.
"The idea that the FBI and associates of the Clinton campaign would pay Mr. Steele to investigate the Republican nominee for president in the run-up to the election raises substantial questions about the FBI's independence from politics, as well as the Obama administration's use of law enforcement and intelligence agencies for political ends," Grassley wrote in the letter to Comey, the Examiner reported.
Christopher Steele was the author of the still unverified dossier who Democrats hired to provide opposition research on Trump.
The Iowa Republican seeks "records related to the reported agreement" and wants to know whose decision it was to hire Steele.
