Ann Romney: Dog 'Loved' Traveling on Car Roof

By    |   Tuesday, 17 April 2012 01:39 PM EDT

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has taken heat from liberals for strapping the family dog, Seamus, to the roof of their car for vacations. But the dog actually “loved it,” Romney’s wife Ann told ABC’s Diane Sawyer in a joint interview with her husband.

Critics have focused on the Romneys’ 1983 trip from Boston to Ontario, Canada, with Seamus inside a dog carrier on the roof of the Romneys’ station wagon, saying Mitt Romney is mean to animals. He called those attacks the most hurtful of the campaign.

But Ann Romney said Tuesday that Seamus greatly enjoyed his rides on the roof and looked forward to trips. “The dog loved it,” she said. “He would see that crate, and he would go crazy because he was going with us on vacation. It was, to me, a kinder thing to bring him along than to leave him in the kennel for two weeks.”

Ann Romney said there was nothing sinister to an anecdote from the 1983 trip that leftists are trying to use against her husband. In that trip, the dog got sick, defecating on himself and the car’s windshield. “We traveled all the time, and once he ate the turkey on the counter,” Ann Romney said. “I mean, he had the runs.”
