Woman Gives Birth in Waymo Car in San Francisco

A woman gave birth in a driverless Waymo vehicle before she reached a hospital in San Francisco, according to the autonomous vehicle company, The Hill reported Wednesday.

The pregnant woman was apparently in labor and trying to reach UCSF Medical Center.

When Waymo's remote Rider Support Team detected "unusual activity," it initiated a call to check on the rider and contacted 911. The mother and her new baby arrived safely in the Waymo at the hospital, according to the company.

The newborn is likely the youngest person ever to ride in a driverless vehicle, the company said.

"We're proud to be a trusted ride for moments big and small, serving riders from just seconds old to many years young," a Waymo spokesperson told KRON. "We wish the new family all the best, and we look forward to safely getting them where they're going through many of life's events."

Jess Berthold, a UC San Francisco spokesperson, told The San Francisco Standard that "we can confirm this is true, and the mother and baby came to our hospital."

The vehicle was immediately taken out of service afterward for cleaning.
