Both sides have ratcheted up the climate change debate.
"I think it’s close to mindless," Vice President Joe Biden recently told
The Hill of skeptics appearing on "Vice," the HBO program. "I think it’s like, you know, almost like denying gravity now."
Meanwhile, Sen. Jeff Sessions was stunned when EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy could not describe the details of earlier climate change models at a meeting earlier this month.
"This is a stunning development — that the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, who should know more than anybody else in the world, who’s proposing hundreds of billions of dollars in costs to prevent climate and temperature increases, doesn’t know whether their projections have been right or wrong," the Alabama Republican said.
And Oklahoma Sen. Jim Inhofe brought a snowball to the Senate floor last month, using the prop to disprove global warming to Democrats.
"In case we have forgotten, because we keep hearing that 2014 has been the warmest year on record, I ask the chair, do you know what this is?" Inhofe asked Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy, who was presiding over the debate.
He then removed the snowball from a plastic bag. Inhofe is chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.
"It’s a snowball. And it’s just from outside here," he said. "So it’s very, very cold out. Very unseasonable."
He then tossed the snowball to Cassidy before finishing his prepared remarks.
The climate change battle has always been acrimonious, the Hill reports, but it has grown more bitter this year.
"I believe that the global warming promoters are the ones on the offensive on this," Marc Morano, the publisher of a climate skeptic blog, told the Hill. "The skeptics are clearly reacting right now."
Morano linked the increasingly testy rhetoric to the Obama administration’s efforts to codify regulations on power plants, which has enraged industry groups and Republicans.
"The global warming promoters are so close to what they consider final victory that they’re trying to clear out any remaining roadblocks," he said.
