Ruth Bader Ginsburg's workout is tough, says a Politico reporter who recently did the same routine with the Supreme Court Justice's personal trainer.
Bryant Johnson, 52, started training the 83-year-old Ginsburg in 1999 after she recovered from colon cancer. He puts her through two one-hour workouts per week at a gym inside the Supreme Court building. The workouts start around 7 p.m. Ginsburg listens to PBS NewsHour while she exercises. Politico reporter Ben Schreckinger asked to tag along with Ginsburg but was told instead Johnson would put him through the workout alone.
"I hope he makes it through," Ginsburg told Johnson.
Johnson has Ginsburg start off on the elliptical and then takes her through a series of stretches. Then it is on to machine lifts, including chest press – at a weight of about 60-70 pounds – leg extensions, wide grip lat pulldowns, seated rows, butterfly presses, and standing rows. One-legged squats, pushups and uneven pushups, planks and abductions and adduction are next, followed by a series of free weight exercises.
"There is no break," said Johnson when Schreckinger asked whether Ginsburg paused between the one-legged squats exercise.
"I'm no athlete, but I'm young and reasonably fit," Schreckinger wrote. "I thought the workout would be pattycake, but it was much harder than I expected. Ginsburg's personal trainer, it turns out, is no joke."
