Rev. Gerald Murray to Newsmax: Good Friday Offers Hope Through Struggle

By    |   Friday, 03 April 2026 11:02 AM EDT

Good Friday gives people "an understanding of how it is that we can get through all the difficulties of life," Rev. Gerald Murray told Newsmax on Friday.

Appearing on Newsmax's "National Report," Murray and the Rev. Michael Duffy reflected on the deeper meaning of Good Friday and the growing resurgence of faith across the United States, particularly among younger generations seeking purpose beyond what modern culture offers.

"Good Friday gives us an understanding of how it is that we can get through all the difficulties of life," Murray said, pointing to the suffering, sacrifice, and ultimate triumph of Jesus Christ as the foundation of Christian hope.

He explained that the solemn day, marking the crucifixion of Christ, is called "good" because it represents a turning point for humanity.

"Jesus bore all of those sins and difficulties on the cross ... and then Easter, he rose from the dead, triumphant. So good triumphs over evil," Murray said.

As churches prepare for Easter Sunday — "our Super Bowl," according to Duffy — the priest described the moment as an opportunity to reach millions with a timeless message.

"Jesus Christ loves you and he wants to be a part of your life," Duffy said, stressing that the resurrection is not just a historical event, but a call to action.

The message, Murray said, resonates in a world facing ongoing challenges — from personal struggles to global conflicts — offering believers a path forward rooted in faith and redemption.

Duffy echoed that sentiment, noting a trend: more young people are returning to church in search of meaning and stability.

He said many are disillusioned with a culture that prioritizes wealth, fame, and material success but often leaves people unfulfilled.

"People have been looking for something for a long time, and they've not been finding it," Duffy said.

Across the country, churches are reporting rising attendance and conversions, particularly among Gen Z.

Duffy highlighted significant increases in baptisms on Long Island, calling it the highest level seen in decades.

Murray added that the resurgence is especially notable among young men, a demographic that has traditionally been less engaged in religious life.

He attributed the shift to a desire for truth, purpose, and answers to life’s biggest questions.

"What happens when I die? What’s the real purpose of life? Where’s true justice?" Murray said, explaining that Christianity provides answers that are both "demanding" and "fulfilling."

The broader cultural shift comes as Americans increasingly question the promises of secular society.

Both priests emphasized that true fulfillment cannot be found in material success alone, but rather through faith, sacrifice, and a relationship with God.
