Lifestyle Adjustments Reduce Inflammation

Michael Roizen, M.D. By Friday, 05 December 2025 11:33 AM EST Current | Bio | Archive

Chronic inflammation is an all-too-common condition that indicates your immune system is revved up and injuring your health. It can trigger pain, weight gain, gastrointestinal distress, skin disruptions, fatigue, insomnia, cognition problems — and depression.

That leads to an erosion of your quality of life, speeds up aging, and amplifies your risks for a slew of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular conditions, dementia, kidney and liver problems, and Type 2 diabetes.

Inflammation's troublemaking also disconnects you from life-affirming and empowering social connections.

In fact, a new study in the American Journal of Psychiatry has found that when people are contending with depression and their level of the inflammation marker C-reactive-protein (CRP) is high, they're likely to lose interest in or motivation to pursue rewarding, pleasurable experiences.

No wonder inflammatory diseases accelerate mortality and account for more than half of all deaths globally.

So have your CRP and myeloperoxidase levels evaluated. (Myeloperoxidase is an enzyme associated with inflammatory conditions and infections.)

And embrace a combination of anti-inflammatory lifestyle adjustments and supplements such as:

• Cut out added sugars, syrups, refined carbs, and red meats.

• Adopt good sleep habits and stress management with regular physical activity, meditation, and a posse and sense of purpose.

• Supplements to consider (ask your doctor) include bovine colostrum, omega-3s, turmeric, baby aspirin, green tea extract, and vitamin D.

And consider a statin, colchicine, a GLP-1, or therapeutic plasma exchange, which can filter harmful inflammatory proteins, antibodies, and toxins from your body.
