Every generation thinks they are special and that the the life and times they experienced were historical. Tom Brokaw chronicled "The Greatest Generation" for its significant contributions to society. Years from now, someone will certainly do the same for the Millennials.

I would like to think that baby boomers also have their special place in American history.

What kind of generation have we been? What will history remember about us? Will we be seen as the generation of change and advancement? Will be remembered as the generation of protest and the "generation gap"? Will we be seen as the generation of technological breakthroughs?

Or, will we be thought of as a generation that was always still trying to define ourselves

Every generation is judged based on those members who are game changers.

Boomers have many game changers among them.

Like Bill Gates, the late Steve Jobs, Oprah Winfrey, and Michael Jordan.

These baby boomers are so prominent that calling them "game changers" does not do them justice. But there are many other baby boomers whose names might not ring a bell — but who collectively helped define our generation.

They are a unique group of people who can recall the times when a two-week vacation spent in a car with their parents was part of life's fabric.

Boomers can recall when going to college meant they were doing something that their parents might not have done; they can declare, that while part of the workforce, they experienced the shift from retirement pensions to 401ks.

Now baby boomers are redefining aging; they want to continue to make life count, and  do so in many different ways. For example, there is a cottage industry for "over 55" living communities. This makes boomers part of the experiment that involves moving their elderly parents to assisted living.

Baby boomers have reinvented the travel industry. This is the lifestyle experiment of 2017.

It is said that baby boomers have a longing for the past, with an eye on the future.

I subscribe to this idea, for I have observed that while most baby boomers like to recall the past, they also feel that there is still so much more to discover.

That is the spirit of the baby boomer generation.

Baby boomers are all about discovery, for themselves — or for society as a whole.

What will history books write about this active, curious  segment of the population?

Some say there is a lot to choose from. Some baby boomers like to think, "Don't be so fast to put us in the history books. Boomers still have more contributions to make in the future."

It's true that our musical icons are a bit older and most of our sports heroes have left the playing field. And maybe our careers are in the twilight or in an "encore."

But the book has yet to close on baby boomers.
