Question: My son (he's 24) got the nasal flu shot last year and swears he still is having problems (says he can't smell anything). Is it possible? What are the possible side effects from the nasal vaccine? Is the needle safer?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Nasal flu vaccine will not cause long-term anosmia (loss of smell). You should have him see a doctor for ab evaluation.
Loss of smell is often due to a sinus infection or disease, but it can also be due to cranial nerve loss due to a lesion, tumor, or complex infection.
