Is Fast-Clotting Blood Risky?

By    |   Wednesday, 24 July 2013 05:19 PM EDT

Question: I recently went to donate blood and was turned away because they said my blood clots too quickly. Is this a problem I should be treated for?

Dr. Hibberd’s answer:

When blood clots quickly, it’s important to be checked by a doctor. It can be caused by a number of disorders, and may place you at risk for internal organ damage, stroke, or heart attack.

Disorders involving red blood cells (such as polycythemia), white blood cells (leukemia), platelets, antibodies (such as myeloma, lymphoma), autoimmune disorders, and malignancies can all increase the tendency for blood to clot or cause rapid clotting.

A visit to the doctor for an evaluation and blood testing can help define the problem and suggest an appropriate treatment.
