Can I Safely Take Aspirin and Xarelto?

By    |   Wednesday, 19 February 2014 06:19 PM EST

Question: Is it safe to take 650 milligrams of arthritis pain medicine with Xarelto?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Generally this is not a safe combination. Xarelto is a prescription medication used to reduce the risk of stroke and blood clots in people with atrial fibrillation, not caused by a heart valve problem, or who have had hip or knee surgery. It is also used to treat deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, and help reduce the risk of these conditions recurring

You will have a higher risk of bleeding if you use Xarelto with other medications that increase your risk of bleeding, and this list includes aspirin, especially at the higher dose that you are using. A baby aspirin is 81 milligrams, and bleeding risks are elevated even with this lower dose, yet you are taking an eight times larger dose, and are not likely advised to be using the aspirin at this dose with Xarelto.

Try substituting Tylenol for pain and consult your physician for alternative treatment choices for your arthritis. Remember that NSAIDS (nonsteroidal medications with or without prescription) are not usually advised in combination with Xarelto. This includes avoiding over the counter Advil, Aleve, ibuprofen, Naproxen and all related medications.
