Top 5 Employers in Alabama: Which Companies Have the Most Jobs?

Alabama hosts a variety of employers, ranging from military institutions to universities and telecommunications businesses. The businesses listed below employ tens of thousands of Alabamans. While other industries, including steel, chemical manufacturing, aerospace engineering, auto manufacturing, and food processing also contribute to the state’s infrastructure, the following five employers are some of the largest in the state.

1. The U.S. Army/Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, has more than 35,000 employees on hand. This includes about 1,000 individuals on active-duty military, 19,500 government civilians, and an additional 15,000 contractors.

2. The University of Alabama at Birmingham employs around 18,000 people. It is an international center and a global leader in health care and medical research.

3. Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base, with 12,280 employees, is based in Montgomery. The site dates back to 1910, when the Wright brothers established a flying school there. The base calculates that its economic impact on the area and surrounding cities is somewhere in the neighborhood of $2.6 billion every year.

4. The Huntsville Hospital System, which serves residents in the northern part of Alabama as well as those in the south central area of Tennessee, employs just over 7,129 people.

5. BellSouth, located in Birmingham, has 5,485 employees.

This telecommunications company operated the first telephone exchange in the state.

According to the Alabama Department of Labor, the number of jobs in the state grew an average of 1.13 percent in 2014. The last time growth was higher dated to 2007, just before the financial crisis, when the rate of job growth was 1.32 percent.
