Question: My osteoarthritis has become exceedingly painful. In addition, I have had two knee replacement surgeries on one knee which is still quite painful. Do you have any suggestions for managing my pain?

Pain management after total knee replacement is usually very straightforward and involves anti-inflammatory painkillers. But failure to respond to them can suggest something may be happening within the knee that requires a cortisone injection or further evaluation to be sure the bone itself is healthy.
Usually joint aspiration and imaging will provide the answers. Make an appointment with your doctor for an assessment and prescription anti-inflammatory pain medicine. Consider consulting an orthopedic or rheumatology specialist, if the painkillers don't work for you.
Until you see your doctor, use Tylenol — 500 milligrams, four times a day — for relief and try warm packs and, if you can, whirlpool baths.
