President Donald Trump is "absolutely a Republican," even if he did work with Democrats on a plan to raise the nation's debt ceiling for three months, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin insisted Tuesday.
"The president reached out to Democrats and showed that he could get things done on a bipartisan basis," Mnuchin said while addressing critics at the Delivering Alpha conference presented by CNBC and Institutional Investor magazine. "I think that's important."
Last week, Trump reached a deal with Democratic leaders by signing a bill extending the country's borrowing limit by three months, rather than for a longer period preferred by Senate Republicans.
"The president is absolutely a Republican," said Mnuchin, pointing out that he's one as well. "I know on this show [MSNBC'S "Squawk Box"] and others that's been questioned."
Mnuchin on Tuesday also said he recognizes that it's important to have good working relationships with both parties, noting that he met with House Speaker Paul Ryan Monday and that he and Ryan also had dinner together.
"The relationships with the president are there," Mnuchin said.
