President Donald Trump's public support for granting permanent legal status for undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children is "another humiliation" for his own attorney general, according to The Washington Post.
Last week, Jeff Sessions announced on behalf of the Trump administration that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program "is being rescinded."
"There is nothing compassionate about the failure to enforce immigration laws," Sessions said.
"Failure to enforce the laws in the past has put our nation at risk of crime, violence and even terrorism. … The effect of this unilateral executive amnesty, among other things, contributed to a surge of unaccompanied minors on the southern border that yielded terrible humanitarian consequences. It also denied jobs to hundreds of thousands of Americans by allowing those same jobs to go to illegal aliens."
The decision was met with heavy criticism, from both sides, who called for legislation that would allow for "Dreamers," as those granted amnesty through the program are known, to gain permanent legal status.
On Thursday, Trump indicated that he would support such a measure, while simultaneously contradicting Sessions in his characterization of "Dreamers."
He told reporters the same day that the White House and Congress are "working on a plan for DACA."
